RI State Police to Increase Patrols Over New Year's Holiday

“Hundreds of people die each year during the holidays because of crashes caused by motorists impaired by alcohol or drugs. That is simply unacceptable. Those deaths are entirely preventable. We will not tolerate impaired drivers on our roadways,” said Assumpico.
This comes as part of the Rhode Island State Police’s participation in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

According to Federal highway statistics, an average of 300 people have died in drunk driving crashes during the week between Christmas and New Year’s over the last five years.
No fatalities have been reported in Rhode Island since December 18, when two motorists were killed in a head-on crash in Foster at approximately 7 a.m.
As of December 21, there have been 58 fatalities, compared with 84 all of last year.
