“It’s disturbing that just one-third of our state’s students are reading at the appropriate level at the end of third grade—it’s a rally cry for all of us to come together to support summer learning because it is a strategy we know will help children achieve grade level reading success,” said Lisa Gillette, Chair of the Women’s Leadership Council, and Executive Director of Foster Forward.
The Women’s Leadership Council has put together a challenge to match all gifts made in support of United Way of RI’s highly successful Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative, up to a total of $50,000, through December 31.
Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative
The initiative is a collaboration between Hasbro, Inc., and UWRI that provides children with educational opportunities that combine hands-on learning with real-world application. The six-week summer learning program helps students avoid “summer learning loss,” which happens when school is not in session.
To date, the effort has served over 1,600 kids across 14 programs and participants have experienced gains of 15 percent in both math and reading skills.
Those interested in making a gift in support of the HSLI that will be doubled by the generosity of the WLC are encouraged to make a secure, online donation through UWRI’s website.
