Guest MINDSETTER ™ John Loughlin: PawSox Listening Tour? Listen to This!

Recently, the new owners of the Pawtucket minor-league franchise the Pawtucket Red Sox did a field trip to Durham, North Carolina to show business leaders and selected media just how lovely a shiny new stadium in the downtown can be. The want to draw a comparison between the Durham Bulls and the Pawtucket Red Sox, so in that spirit, I thought I would take a moment to “revise and extend” their remarks and conduct a similar comparison.

Let’s start with the cost of seeing a game between Pawtucket and Durham. For example, to see a Durham Bulls game will cost you from $24.53 "premium seats" to $8.37 to sit in the outfield bleachers. Parking is $5.00 for an average of $21.45 per game putting the cost for a family of 4 at $85.80 without food, beverages or souvenirs.

In Pawtucket, box seats are $13.00 general admission is $9.00 and parking is free for an average of $11.00. Our same family of four can see a game for $44.00 almost 1/2 of the cost of the stadium in Durham.

Now let’s compare the cities in which the stadiums are proposed?

Durham, in the center of the research triangle, has a 4.4% unemployment rate and a school system that ranks 9th in the country. According to Forbes Magazine, Providence has unemployment over 6% and schools which rank 97th in the country. Durham is ranked 20th in terms of best places for business while Providence ranks 158th.

Ok, but how about a comparison of North Carolina and Rhode Island?

North Carolina ranks #3 in best places to do business while Rhode Island ranks 46th! (that's out of 50 in case your scoring at home)! Also North Carolina ranks 4th in lowest cost-to-do business while Rhode Island is at 36th and Rhode Island has the second worst regulatory climate in the country at 49th.

While I can be convinced that using tax subsidies selectively can spur economic activity, those scarce state resources need to focused on where they can do the most good for the greatest number of Rhode Islanders. Think high-tech industry? Manufacturing? Leveraging our colleges and universities with incentives to keep companies and jobs in Rhode Island – Teespring? The LAST thing we should throw a dollar at is a sports franchise - that's clearly not what ails Rhode Island.

Perhaps, and this is just a suggestion, Providence and the State of Rhode Island should get its schools and business, and regulatory climate in order first - then think about spending tax subsidies on baseball in an effort to nearly double the cost to us for enjoying our National pass-time?
