The biggest issue this campaign season is improving Rhode Island’s economy.  Residents are eager to hear how we can grow our economy now that we have weathered through the Great Recession.  For two years, I have focused on improving the fundamentals of our business climate.  Last year we reduced our corporate tax rate and this year we overhauled the Administrative Procedures Act, which was a heavy burden on small businesses.  These changes have established a new framework that puts us in a better position to attract out-of-state companies and empower entrepreneurs here in Rhode Island that want to start their own business.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

Rhode Island’s economy will only improve if we prioritize economic development. Study after study shows our business climate needs significant improvement.  As Majority Leader, I have supported measures to reduce taxes on small businesses, overhaul our regulatory framework, and spur job growth through investments in workforce development.  We need a sense of urgency, and residents in my district can expect me to proceed with focus and determination if I am reelected.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

Over the last month, I have been on hundreds of residents’ doorsteps listening to their concerns.  At the end of the day, all of these conversations boil down to one thing: well-paying jobs.  Parents are worried their children will move away after graduating from college because they do not have an opportunity to find a fulfilling career here.  Recent graduates believe they will never be able to earn enough to own a home or start a family.  As a state, we need to remain laser focused on jobs and the economy to create a climate where businesses flourish and create well-paying jobs.

4.  Why are you running for office?

I am a lifelong resident of Providence.  I love this city.  As Majority Leader, I am now in a position where I can support reforms that move our city forward.  During my three years as Majority Leader in the House, I’ve fought hard to increase education aid to Providence by over $30 million, reduce taxes on retirees and struggling small businesses, and pass legislation to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.  Providence deserves a strong voice to advocate on its behalf, and, as Majority Leader, I can be that strong voice.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

Certainly my father and mother inspired me growing up.  I became an attorney like my father and joined our family law firm after law school.  I now draw inspiration from my children, nieces, and nephews, because I hope to build a brighter Rhode Island for their generation.
