NEW: Mattiello Ousts Three From Committees After Voting Against Tolls

Speaker Mattiello bounced three House members from key committee positions after"no" votes on RhodeWorks.
Rhode Island Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello removed three legislators from their prime committee positions on Thursday -- following "no" votes on the RhodeWorks truck tolls legislation.

Representative Raymond Hull was pulled from the House Finance Committee; Rep. Joseph Solomon from the House Judiciary Committee; and Rep. Robert Phillips from the House Committee on Corporations following "no" votes on the RhodeWorks legislation -- with Hull calling it the "ugly side of politics."

The move comes on the day when the Rhode Island Senate approved the controversial truck tolls legislation and Governor Gina Raimondo signed it into law.

Mattiello offered the following explanation on Thursday.

“I am always assessing the operations of the House of Representatives.  I have expectations for everyone in their respective roles. I made the determination that changes were necessary in the committee structure to best serve the citizens of the state to move their agenda forward.”

Hull on Record

Hull acknowledged the move was due, in his opinion, to opposition to RhodeWorks -- and truck tolls -- and that it was the "ugly side of politics."

Hull, however, said he bore no ill will towards Mattiello.

"It goes with the territory, it's the nature of the job," said Hull. "I don't want to be shut down by anybody. People elected me. I  don't have faults with the Speaker, I just don't think [RhodeWorks] was right. To be silent and just sit there -- i think it does more harm than good."

Hull said he wasn't surprised with the timing of the announcement.

"If it happens now, or happens a week from now, it's the nature of the beast," said Hull. "As long as there's no name calling, that's how it goes. I've got a district to serve."

Hull said he found out when the rest of the body did, on the House floor.

"They tell you on the floor, when at the end of the session, the clerk reads off memos, and that's how you know," said Hull.  "This is just one of the ugly things in politics -- I was brought up on honor and respect, this is the ugly thing that most people don't see."

Hull said he didn't hold any animosity towards Mattiello following the decision.

"They just understand where I'm at," said Hull. "It's not that I have any particular issue with leadership."
