NAACP, U.S. Congressman Sue Trump, Far-Right Groups Over Capitol Riot

The NAACP filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against former President Donald Trump and far-right extremist groups in connection with the January 6 Capitol riots that killed five people and injured dozens of officers.

“Why it matters,” reports Axios. “The federal lawsuit filed on behalf of House Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) shows that Trump continues to face legal problems stemming from the riot, even after he was acquitted in his Senate impeachment trial Saturday.”

The lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. by the NAACP accuses Trump, his attorney Rudy Giuliani, the Proud Boys, and the Oath Keepers of conspiring to incite a riot at the Capitol with the goal of preventing Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential election.

“The lawsuit contends that Mr. Trump and Mr. Giuliani violated the Ku Klux Klan Act, an 1871 statute that includes protections against violent conspiracies that interfered with Congress’s constitutional duties,” reports the New York Times. 

“The suit is the latest legal problem for Mr. Trump,” the NYT continues. “New York prosecutors are investigating his financial dealings; New York’s attorney general is pursuing a civil investigation into whether Mr. Trump’s company misstated assets to get bank loans and tax benefits; and a Georgia district attorney is examining his election interference effort there.”
