Brown Football Edges Bryant 28-23 in Season Opener

Brown edges Bryant 28-23
Brown quarterback Nicholas Duncan ran for two touchdowns and 73 yards in his first collegiate start as the Bears edged in-state rival Bryant 28-23 on Saturday at Brown Stadium.

Duncan also threw for 152 yards and a touchdown as Brown starts the season with a record of 1-0.

Bryant drops to 1-2 on the season.

Brown Holds Off Bryant

After Bryant took a 3-0 lead, Brown’s Scott Boylan returned a 95-yard kickoff to give the Bears a 7-3 lead following an extra point by Ben Rosenblatt.

Brown would add to their lead with 8:27 left in the second quarter when quarterback Nick Duncan would run 50 yards to the end zone to give the Bears a 14-3 lead following a Rosenblatt extra point.

The Bulldogs would cut the Brown lead to four with 51 seconds left in the half when Bryant quarterback Price Wilson found Portsmouth's Matt Sewall on a 17-yard touchdown pass.

The Bears would take a 14-10 lead into the half.

Just a few minutes into the second half, Brown would extend their lead when Duncan ran five yards into the end zone to give the Bears a 21-10 lead following a Rosenblatt extra point.

The Bulldogs would again get within four after Wilson would connect with Sewall again, this time on an 18-yard pass to cut Brown’s lead to 21-17 following an extra point from Bryant kicker Gavin Rowley.

The Bears would score for the final time in the game when Duncan found Isaac Whitney for a seven-yard touchdown pass to give the Bears a 28-17 following a Rosenblatt extra point.

The Bulldogs cut the Brown lead to 28-23 with 4:57 to play in the game when Devin Ray found Pat Tanner for a two-yard touchdown. The score came after Bryant converted three times on fourth down.

Bryant would get one more opportunity, but junior linebacker Isaiah Tompkins would intercept a Wilson pass to end the game.

Next up

Brown will open Ivy League play on Saturday, September 23 when they visit Harvard.

Kick-off is set for 12 p.m.

Bryant also returns to action on the 23 when they host Fordham.

Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
