World Golf Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam will be honored by the Burke Fund with the John P. Burke Award for her accomplishments in the game of golf and for her actions on and off the course as a role model for young people.

Sorenstam will be honored at the Burke Fund's 70th Anniversary celebration banquet on September 7 at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick.

The John P. Burke Award recognizes an individual or organization that has reached exceptional levels of achievement while helping others through golf. Sorenstam will be the fourth recipient of the award joining Brad Faxon, reverend Joseph Lennon and Tom Ryan.

Annika Sorenstam

Arguably the greatest women's golfer of all-time, Sorenstam won 89 worldwide golf tournaments including 10 major championships, including the 2006 U.S. Women's Open at Newport Country Club.

Sorenstam won the Rolex LPGA Player of the Year award 8 times, the most in history, and also won 6 ESPY Awards for most outstanding golfer and best female athlete.

She competed in the 2013 CVS Charity Classic at Rhode Island Country Club.

Off the course, Sorenstam created the ANNIKA Foundation as a way to teach kids the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle through fitness and nutrition.

Of course the foundation does involve golf as it conducts four major golf events a year for junior girls. The events are the AJGA ANNIKA Invitational at Reunion Resort in Florida, ANNIKA Invitational at Mission Hills in China, ANNIKA Invitational Europe in Sweden and the ANNIKA Cup, a team event for Swedish juniors.

In 2013, the foundation's reach extended to college with the ANNIKA Award, presented to the most outstanding female NCAA Division I golfer.

The Burke Fund

Established in 1946 to honor Rhode Islanders who served in WWII, the John P. Burke Memorial Fund provides college financial aid to kids who have worked in golf to assist them in getting a college education.

Since it's inception, more than 1,100 men and women have been recognized as Burke Scholars, receiving over $3.3 million in scholarship awards.
