Alex Fontaine- East Greenwich High School Senior- Hockey Player

What has been the biggest challenge being a high school athlete?

My biggest challenge is being a girl on a team of all boys. The challenge is facing other teams because I am an anomaly. For the majority of time, it is okay but sometimes it can be really hard. There are many challenges that all high school athletes face but this is the biggest one for me.

Who is your biggest motivator?

My biggest motivator is my mom. She has always driven me to my games and practices and she has paid the expensive costs for equipment and camps. She is my motivator because she always believes in me no matter what. She has given me the mentality that I can do anything. She is my biggest support and I look up to her very much. Therefore, she motivates me and I always want to do my best to make her proud.

Who is your biggest rival?

As a team, our biggest rival has to be Coventry because they border our town and we have to share a rink with them. Thus, we are constantly in a battle and trying to prove which team is better. Our biggest rival used to be Lincoln just because it was such a physical game. Now, we are in different divisions so we don't play them anymore. Coventry is always a big game and we always want to beat them.

What are you working on to improve your game?

I am working on a lot of different things to improve my game but my shot is my main focus. It needs to be harder and faster so I constantly work on it. Training is useful but ultimately shooting over and over helps the most.

What is your biggest memory on the rink?

My greatest memory was going to the National Hockey Camp and making the All-Star team for that year. It was a great accomplishment because it showed me how all of my hard work and dedication had paid off. It was a big deal for me to be one of the only girls from New England to make the team.

How do you balance your schoolwork with practices, games and training?

Balancing everything can get tricky. Practices are usually two hours after school so I usually come home and try to get some homework done before hockey. Then, I finish when I come home. I never have a set time for training because if I don't have much homework, I can defiantly workout more. Usually, I train at any spare second that I get. It gets crazy sometimes but I manage it.

Where do you see yourself going from here, do you plan to pursue this sport in college?

In the future, I see myself continuing playing in college and I am already committed to a D1 school. I will be playing in the ECAC next year and I plan to continue to work hard to keep reaching my goals.
