Newport Country Club to Host 2020 U.S. Senior Open

Newport Country Club will host the U.S. Senior Open in June of 2020, the United States Golf Association (USGA) announced on Tuesday. 

The Senior Open is held for players who are age 50 and older. 

Some of the players who are or will be eligible for this tournament include Rhode Island’s Billy Andrade, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els.

The USGA and Newport Country Club 

Newport Country Club has hosted four previous USGA events. 

Starting in 1895, Newport hosted the first U.S. Amateur Championship and the first U.S. Open. 

The U.S. Amateur returned to Newport in 1995 and was won by Tiger Woods, who defeated Buddy Marucci 2 &1 for his second of three straight amateur championships. 

Most recently, Newport hosted the 2006 U.S. Women’s Open which was won by Annika Sorenstam in a 18-hole playoff over Pat Hurst. 

2017 U.S. Senior open 

The 2017 Senior Open will also be held in New England at Salem Country Club in Massachusetts. 

The tournament will be held from June 29 to July 2.
