NEW: North Carolina Loses NCAA Tourneys, Providence Bidding to Host Basketball

Providence will have the opportunity to bid on the 2017 NCAA Tournament, after the NCAA stripped North Carolina of seven championship events due to the state's laws regarding the LGBT community.

The events include the first and second rounds of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Championshps, which were scheduled for Greensboro.

"With the success that we have had in the the past with NCAA basketball, there is no way we would pass on another opportunity to host in 2017," said Larry Lepore, general manager of the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

The decision is expected to be made in October.

The Dunkin' Donuts Center is already scheduled to host the 2017 Men's Ice Hockey East Regional. That is scheduled to take place on March 24 and 25.

Success in 2016

The Dunkin' Donuts Center hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and saw huge success.

It was estimated by the Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau that direct spending alone by visitors was more than $3.5 million.

“I think it speaks to Providence getting behind it. The ticket price was the highest in the country, higher than any of the eight locations, which was all based on demand. We were the first to sell out. This is a big deal in Providence, people support it," said Lepore at the time.

During the tournament, the city allowed for block-party like areas on the city streets on Thursday when the first four games were played, put on a special Waterfire on Friday before the round concluded on Saturday.

Past NCAA Events at the Dunkin' Donuts Center

The Dunkin Donuts Center has hosted NCAA Hockey regionals four times, including 2015, which saw the Providence College Friars advance to the Frozen Four and go on to win the National Championship.

The Dunkin' Donuts Center has also hosted the Frozen Four six times, the last one coming in 2000, and have hosted a total of 35 men's ice hockey tournament games which is the third highest total of any arena in the country.
