The New England Patriots are bringing back quarterback Brian Hoyer on a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Hoyer was released by the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday after they signed former Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers in free agency.

According to Rapoport, Hoyer will get $1 million from the Patriots, $1 million from the Colts that was already guaranteed, and $2 million more available in incentives.

This will be Hoyer’s third stint with the Patriots.

Patriots Quarterback Situation

Hoyer’s return will give the Patriots a veteran presence at the quarterback position after Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency.

Other quarterbacks on the roster include Jarrett Stidham and Cody Kessler.

Heading into the 2020-21 season, it is assumed that Stidham will be the favorite to win the starting job.

Hoyer With Patriots

Hoyer made the Patriots roster as an undrafted rookie in 2009 and spent three seasons with the Patriots before leaving the organization.

During his time away, Hoyer started 39 games with five different teams.

Hoyer returned to New England after he team traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers and served as Brady’s backup in 2017 and 2018.

Last summer, Hoyer was beaten out for the backup job by Stidham in training camp and was released on cut-down day.

Hoyer would go on to sign a three-year deal with the Colts where he backed up former Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett.
