The New England Patriots are re-signing tight end Ben Watson, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Watson returns to the Patriots exactly one week after being released from the team.

The move comes as tight end Matt LaCosse is expected to miss “at least a few weeks” after spraining his MCL, according to NFL Network’s Mike Giardi.

“You know, Ben's a great player. He's been a great player for this team, for other teams, he's had an incredible career,” said Patriots quarterback Tom Brady last week following Watson’s release.

Brady added, “He was right next to me, and for as great as a player he was, he was 10 times a better person, just the highest integrity. I can't say enough good things about Ben, what he's meant to me, my family, our team.”

Watson in New England

Watson, 38, signed with the Patriots back in May after initially retiring from the NFL.

He was suspended for the first four games of the 2019 regular season for using a banned substance.

Upon his return from suspension, he was not activated to the 53-man roster for the Patriots road game against the Washington Redskins.

He was then not activated by 4 p.m. on Monday, October 7, making him a free agent.

"We like Ben, just, we don't have a roster spot for him right now. So, maybe that'll change, but for the moment, that's where it is," said Belichick following Watson's release.

Watson was selected by the Patriots in the first round of the 2004 NFL Draft, and played the first six seasons of his career in New England.
