Sung to Oversee Teams Across 16 Sports and Develop Innovative Student Initiatives

St. Mary Academy – Bay View, a leading independent, Mercy Catholic, college-preparatory school for girls, is proud to announce the appointment of John Sung as its Director of Athletics and Strategic Programs. Sung brings to Bay View a 24-year collegiate athletics career and a deep commitment to student and school development.

“Coach Sung’s impressive track record as both a coach and an administrator are matched by his passion for developing student-athletes as leaders on and off the field,” said Bay View President Amy Gravell. “His vision for athletics and strategic programming will strengthen school spirit, build community, and create exciting new opportunities for our students. We are thrilled to welcome him to the Bay View family.”

In this role, Sung will be responsible for shaping and sustaining a vibrant 16-sport athletics program, recently ranked by USA Today as one of the top 25 best in Rhode Island, and developing strategic initiatives aimed at enriching student life and advancing the school's mission.

“I am honored and humbled to join St. Mary Academy – Bay View as the next Director of Athletics. I want to thank President Amy Gravell and the search committee for believing in my vision. Bay View has a proud tradition of empowering young women, and I look forward to building a championship culture rooted in integrity, growth, and excellence,” Sung said. “My focus will be on recruiting and retaining exceptional coaches, creating meaningful partnerships, and ensuring every student has the opportunity to grow through an athletic experience that is inclusive, challenging, and deeply rewarding.”

Sung comes to Bay View from Nova Southeastern University, where he held the position of interim Director of Athletics. Prior to his time in Florida, he was the head women's lacrosse coach and assistant athletic director at Carthage College. His career in athletics includes a notable five-year tenure at Virginia Tech, where he distinguished himself as the most successful coach in the program's history, achieving 45 victories. While at Virginia Tech, Sung coached four all-Americans, five Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) all-region selections, 10 all-conference honorees, and two training members of Team USA, all while earning academic honor roll honors from the IWLCA from 2017 to 2021.

He will oversee all aspects of the school’s athletic department, including coaching, facilities management, and strategic planning. The school's athletic philosophy emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and a balanced approach to academics and competition. Guided by our new Director of Athletics, this year’s Athletic Hall of Fame will proudly carry forward Bay View’s tradition of celebrating those who have championed women’s athletics and lived out the Mercy values that define our community. We look forward to honoring these outstanding individuals and teams at our induction ceremony on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 6:30 p.m., during Bay View’s Homecoming Weekend. We invite our entire Bay View family to join us in recognizing their dedication, leadership, and sportsmanship - qualities that continue to elevate our school’s legacy.
