Beginning in April, Chris Donovan joined as Development Manager, Joel Kipper as Director of Events & Operations, and Kelly Pattison as Director of Sponsorships and Corporate Relations.
Additionally, long-time team member Tim Blankenship has been appointed as Director of Special Projects.
Chris Donovan, Development Manager, brings more than 15 years of experience in theatre, events, and non-profit organizations, most recently as the Director of Communications & Events at Leadership Rhode Island. A twelve-year resident of Providence, Chris has been involved with WaterFire since his arrival, regularly volunteering at events. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for PechaKucha Providence, The Avenue Concept, and the Providence Drum Troupe. With his deep ties to the local community and proven leadership in the arts, Chris will play a key role in donor engagement, Board relations, and grant writing efforts.
“A decade ago, I had an opportunity to move anywhere in the country, and WaterFire was one of the images that lit up in my mind. Uniquely creative experiences like WaterFire are beacons for pride, connection, and inspiration that make me proud to call Rhode Island my home. I’m excited to be part of the team inspiring others to invest in keeping that flame alive," says Donovan.
Joel Kipper, Director of Events & Operations, returns to Rhode Island after six years away. Originally from Kansas City, Joel has spent the last 23 years in live theatre, serving as a Production Manager. His extensive background in event production will be instrumental as he leads the Events & Operations Department, overseeing the planning and execution of all downtown WaterFire lightings and related events.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to join the WaterFire team and return to the Ocean State. While there’s a lot of work ahead, I’m ready to dive in with energy and passion to help bring this incredible season to life alongside the amazing WaterFire team,” says Kipper.
Kelly Pattison, Director of Sponsorships and Corporate Relations, brings over 15 years of experience in sponsorship, marketing, event management, and revenue generation across both the nonprofit and private sectors. A New England native who has called Rhode Island home for 13 years, Kelly is eager to channel her skills and passion into an organization beloved by the local community. She will guide corporate partnerships, donor engagement, and lead planning for the annual fundraiser gala, FireBall.
“There’s something so special about WaterFire, it inspires not just audiences, but the incredible group of people who make it happen every season,” says Pattison. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to join a team that’s deeply committed to collaboration, creating meaningful experiences, and making a real impact in the community they serve.”
Tim Blankenship, newly appointed Director of Special Projects, is a 22-year veteran of WaterFire and a steadfast advocate for the organization’s mission to unite the community through shared artistic experiences. Having worked across multiple departments, including a decade in production and recent years with the creative services team, Tim brings unmatched institutional knowledge to his new role. He will focus on strengthening internal systems and supporting the creation of new visitor experiences at both the downtown installation and the WaterFire Arts Center.
"WaterFire is many things to many people. Some find it inspirational, some find it meditative, some find it challenging, some find it overwhelming. I've been here long enough to have had all these experiences (and many more). I'm always inspired by the power of art to bring people together and to build new connections. I'm excited about this new role, supporting everyone who makes our work possible, finding new ways to create the magic of WaterFire, and bringing the magic to new audiences," says Balnkenship.
All four staff members' first events in their new roles will be a full lighting on Saturday, May 31, 2025, supported by RISD.
