Rhode Island College Football Preview - November 12, 2016
There are two weeks left of the college football season in Rhode Island the locals are looking to close out the year on a strong note.
Overall it has been a rough year for Bryant,Brown and URI, the teams are a combined 8-18 on the season following wins by Bryant and Brown last weekend.
URI has not played a game since losing 84-7 to James Madison two weeks ago, a loss that has brought into question the future of the program.
Here is this weeks Rhode Island College football preview:
Brown at Dartmouth, 12 p.m.
Brown defeated Yale last week at Brown Stadium and a win this week would get them back to .500 in conference play with one game to play. The last time the Bears finished with a .500 conference record was the 2012 season when they finished 4-3 in the conference.
On offense, the Bears are led by wide receiver Alex Jette, who has hauled in 45 catches for 481 yards and three touchdowns, while also returning punts. Jette has averaged 60 yards receiving per game and 5.6 yards per catch.
For much of the season, Brown has used two quarterbacks. But, it has been junior quarterback Thomas Linta getting the start over the last four weeks. Linda has completed 83 of 156 passes on the season, but has thrown seven interceptions compared to only four touchdowns.
Another player to watch on the Brown offense is freshman running back Livingstone Harriott who emerged last week with 92 yards rushing against Yale. The Brown running attack has averaged 127 yards per game so far this season.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bears have had trouble stopping the opposing teams passing attack, giving up 209 passing yards per game.
To solve that problem, they will look to senior defensive end Richard Jarvis, who leads the Ivy League and is third in the country in tackles for a loss. Jarvis has three tackles for a loss of 14 yards last week against Yale.
Dartmouth
The Big Green are 4-4 overall and 1-4 in conference, that one win coming last week when they defeated Cornell 17-13 after trailing 13-3 in the fourth quarter. They are led by quarterback Jack Heneghan, who threw a the game winning touchdown pass to Charles Mack to get Dartmouth their first conference win last week.
Bryant at #15 Coastal Carolina, 2 p.m.
The Bryant Bulldogs enter Saturday’s game still in search of their first road win of the season, and to do it they will need to knock off #15 Coastal Carolina. The two programs met for the first time ever last season with #1 Coastal Carolina beating Bryant 31-17 in South Carolina.
Entering this game, all eyes will be on Bryant quarterback Dalton Easton, who needs just 142 passing yards to break the program’s all-time passing record.
Turnovers have been an issue at times for the Bryant offense, and it could come up again this week as the Coastal Carolina has forced 21 turnovers so far this season.
Other than Easton, a major focus will be not he Bulldogs defense and if they can get pressure on Carolina quarterback Kenji Bahar. Due to injuries, Bahar is the seventh different player to take snaps at the quarterback position this season.
The Bryant run defense will be tested this week as well. Coastal Carolina averages 243 rushing yards per game, while the Bryant run defense is ranked 26th best in the country, giving up an average of 125 yards per game.
Carolina has rushed for at least 300 yards in each of their last two games.
URI at Elon, 1:30 p.m.
The URI Rams (1-8, 0-6) hit the road to face the Elon Phoenix (2-7, 1-5) for the first time ever on Saturday afternoon in North Carolina, two weeks after suffering their worst loss in program history, an 84-7 loss to James Madison.
URI has lost 23 straight road games dating back to 2013 and 10 straight games in conference. URI’s last conference win came October 10 of last season against Delaware. The Rams have not had more than one win in a season since 2013-14, when they had three.
One positive for URI has been junior running back Harold Cooper, who became the third player in Rams history with two kick returns for 90+ yards after returning a kick 99 yards for a touchdown against James Madison.
Defensively, the Rams will look to D.J. Stewart, who ranks fifth among CAA Football players with an average of 8.3 tackles per game, but overall the Rams defense has not been able to hold up.
On average, URI gives up just under 40 points, 200 pass yards and 230 rushing yards and 428 total yards per game. By comparison, the URI offense only averages 12 points per game.
The good news for the Rams is that Elon struggles in both of those categories as well. The Phoenix only average 12 points per game, while they give up 26 points per game.
A good opportunity for the Rams to get a win on the road and try to put the James Madison game behind them.
