Rhode Island soccer star Michael Parkhurst announced that he will retire from Major League Soccer (MLS) at the conclusion of this season.

“The time has come for me unfortunately, this will be my last season as a professional. I know I’m one of the lucky ones to say that I've really really enjoyed what I’ve been able to do the last 15 years. To kick a soccer ball and get paid for it has been an absolute dream come true,” said Parkhurst in a video statement on Twitter.

Parkhurst has three regular-season games remaining with Atlanta United before the playoffs begin.

Atlanta is currently 17-11-3 on the year and in second place in the Eastern Conference.

Parkhurst’s Career

Parkhurst was selected ninth overall in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution.

He earned MLS Rookie of the Year, and then won the MLS Defender of the Year two years later in 2007.

Following his stint with the Revolution, Parkhurst went to Europe, where he spent four years with Nordsjælland of the Danish Superliga, appearing in 128 games.

Parkhurst returned to the U.S. and the MLS in 2014 where he signed on with the Columbus Crew.

He played three seasons in Columbus before being traded to the expansion franchise Atlanta United in 2017, where he plays now.

Upon joining Atlanta, Parkhurst was named the first captain in team history and helped the team to an MLS Cup victory last season.

Along with his MLS and European career, Parkhurst has also made 25 appearances on the U.S. National Team and has been selected to five MLS All-Star games.
