NEW: RI Unemployment Rate Drops to 3.9% in September

RI unemployment rate drops to 3.9% in September
Rhode Island’s unemployment rate dropped to 3.9 percent during the month of September, while job numbers remained unchanged from August, according to the RI Department of Labor and Training.

“Our job training and economic development approach is working. We’ve created 19,300 jobs since 2015 and our unemployment rate is the lowest its been since 1989,” said Governor Gina Raimondo in a tweet.

For the second straight month, the Rhode Island unemployment rate decreased.

September’s unemployment rate of 3.9 percent is down one-tenth of a percentage point from the August rate of 4 percent.

The number of unemployed RI residents was 22,100, down 500 from August.

Since September of 2017, the number of unemployed decreased by 2,800.

Across the country, the unemployment rate was 3.7 percent in September of 2018, down two-tenths of a percentage point from August and down five-tenths of a percentage point since last year.

Job Numbers Remain Same

In September, the number of Rhode Island-based jobs was unchanged from the August employment level of 502,100.

Overall, Rhode Island’s job count is up 7,000 from September 2017.

The RI labor force totaled 561,900 in September 2018, down 300 from August 2018 but up 6,000 from September 2017.
