Smart Benefits: 10 Days to Shop for New HealthSource Plan for Jan. 1

Coverage for current enrollees in HealthSource RI ends on December 31, 2015 – but insureds only have until December 23 to shop around, select and pay for a new plan to have uninterrupted health coverage starting January 1. Customers who don’t make a change by December 23 will be automatically renewed in their current plan or one with similar coverage if their current plan isn’t available as long as they continue to pay their monthly premium.

Same Deadline for New Customers

New customers enrolling in an individual or family plan must also choose a plan and pay their first month’s premium by December 23, 2015, for coverage effective January 1.

Open Enrollment Ends Jan. 31

Open enrollment for HealthSource ends January 31, 2016. After that time, the only way individuals and families can obtain coverage for 2016 is if they qualify for a special enrollment period due to life changes such as job loss, birth of a child or several other events that impact their ability to get coverage.

Uninsured Penalty Rises in 2016

For those without health insurance coverage in 2016, the penalty will increase to $695 per adult and $347 per child, up to $2,085, or 2.5% of annual household income, whichever is greater. To avoid this penalty, customers must enroll in a qualifying plan by January 31, 2016.
