Smart Benefits: Is Your Handbook Snow-Day Ready?

In the Northeast, businesses are routinely subject to severe weather conditions. If your handbook doesn’t already contain a policy about the impact of snow or other inclement weather on the workplace, it’s time to develop one.

When writing your workplace policy, be sure to address:

  • When and how you will announced closings or delays, as well as how the company will handle early closures due to weather conditions that occur during the work day
  • Expectations of employees regarding making reasonable efforts to get to work if the office remains open – and how they should notify the company if they can’t make it in
  • Whether employees can or should be expected to work from home if the office is closed or they can’t get in to work
  • Pay obligations for employees, both nonexempt and exempt, in the event of a closure, and whether opportunities may be offered for nonexempt employees to make up missed time
  • Any requirements regarding the use of paid time off
