Smart Benefits: Tips for a Healthy Workplace During Cold & Flu Season

- Promote the Flu Vaccination. Even getting a flu vaccine later in the season can afford protection. To encourage vaccination, remind employees about the importance of flu shots through emails, newsletters or posters placed in common areas like break rooms. If you don’t offer flu shots on site, suggest that workers get them on their own.
- Discourage Workers from Coming in When Sick. Rest is the best treatment for the cold and flu so encourage workers to stay home until they’re better, or at least until 24 hours after their fever ends. Not only will the recovery time allow employees to get healthier sooner, it will also prevent the spread of the virus to others in the workplace.
- Make Hand Sanitizer Readily Available. Whether you install stations or just strategically place bottles around the workplace in areas like cafeterias and restrooms, it’s important to suggest employees sanitize throughout the day. And for devices like phones or shared workstations, provide alcohol wipes workers can use to clean surfaces.
- Discourage Hand Shakes. Educate employees on the importance of coughing or sneezing into their sleeves. And even with these precautions, it’s still important to suggest colleagues avoid shaking hands with others who may be ill during this time of year.
- Schedule Additional Cleanings. If you use a cleaning service, arrange to have the company come in on a more regular basis to keep areas like kitchens and restrooms free of germs. If you don’t use a cleaner, OSHA suggest taking steps to prevent the spread of viruses, such as cleaning frequently touched common surfaces and making no-touch wastebaskets available for discarded tissues.
