RI Health Recommends Closure of Third Beach & Camp Watchaug Due to High Bacteria Levels

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) is recommending the closure of Middletown’s Third Beach and Camp Watchaug in Charlestown for swimming due to high bacteria levels.

According to RIDOH, they will “continue to monitor and review beach water quality regularly to ensure safe bathing throughout the summer season. The status of a beach may change as new data become available.”

Third Beach and Camp Camp Watchaug are just the latest in a series of beach closures by the Rhode Island Department of Health over the last few weeks, as reported by GoLocalProv.

North Providence Resident Infected 

As GoLocalProv reported, North Providence resident Donna Pezza said she was told she contracted cellulitis -- a bacterial skin infection -- after swimming at Rhode Island beaches.

Donna Pezza took to Facebook to write the following. 

"I just came home from the hospital — I got Cellulitis bacteria infection from the dirty ocean here in R.I. Please stay out of the ocean…it is full of bacteria which can cause this or vomiting and diarrhea or even skin rash…R.I. Department of Recreation is not reporting what could happen to you and they should stop people from any swimming at all beaches until all is 100% clean."
