Fit for Life: My Daily Battle

I was away in North Carolina a couple of weeks ago and put on the local news in my room for background noise.

They did a segment on a local NASCAR race track and showed the fans on race day. They drank beer, ate pork rinds, and cheered for their favorite race car driver.
Then I saw another commercial for Disney Land and how many people would travel for Memorial Day. They showed people being pushed around in carts holding beverages and junk food.
Then, the commercials came on.
One medication after another promises to cure the symptoms that wouldn't exist if people weren't eating junk food and being inactive. Medicines for high blood sugar, depression, skin irritations, high blood pressure, etc., promise to get you up and about so you can enjoy your day.
That's all well and good until the end of the commercial, when they list the "possible" side effects each of these medications can have. I am not going to list them all because there are too many. However, the side effects are more concerning than what the medicine should cure.
One example is a depression medication that may cause suicidal thoughts and behaviors or an allergy med that causes dehydration, dry mouth, and dizziness. In my opinion, those are worse than the original problem.
The funniest ad I heard was on the radio about life insurance.
The ad starts out by asking, "Are you a 50-year male that's a little porky and has been refused life insurance?" "Then you need to see Big Lou for a policy that will get you 1 million in life insurance for under $200 a month."
Then the ad finishes by saying, "Call Big Lou; he's on meds too."
So what is the message here?
I am not a conspiracy theorist; however, I know that the Big industries are all about profit and have zero integrity when obtaining it. Big Food and Big Pharma are working together to keep us in this vicious cycle of dependence on their products.
Big food manufactures foods that get kids addicted and make us sick, fat, and unhealthy. Big Pharma rides in on the white horse and saves us with all these meds. Or do they? Like I said earlier, the side effects are worse than the symptoms they cure, so you need more meds to counteract the side effects of the first medication.
The ads and the commercials tell the public that it's ok to indulge in an unhealthy lifestyle because we have a solution. However, the reality is that they just put band-aids on the problem rather than attacking the real issues.
The truth is that lifestyle is the deciding factor and dictates who stays healthy, gets sick, and is sucked into this vicious cycle of disease and medications that will keep you ill and dependent on their products.
Big companies are telling us that eating right and exercising is unnecessary because they can solve the ailments we will encounter by living a less-than-desirable lifestyle.
It's our duty and responsibility to fight back and not let this happen to us. Here are a few things you can do to stay healthy without getting pulled into a life of pain and misery.
1. Exercise: This is the #1 antidepressant you can take, and the side effects are more energy, better posture, physique, and a higher self-image. Some folks have clinical depression and need meds to get out of bed. However, most anxiety and depression can be overcome with exercise and healthy living.
2. Eat whole organic, non-processed food: This is the cure for everything from allergies/ joint pain (think inflammation), acid reflux, high blood pressure, digestive issues, and on and on. There aren't many issues that a well-structured nutrition program can't fix.
3. Sleep: Losing sleep creates a whole chain of events that lead to ailments in the human body. Lack of sleep affects everything from your energy levels to hormonal repair and regeneration, so make this a priority and get your 8 hours in.
4. Hydration: Our bodies are a high percentage of water, and water helps with everything from muscle development to cell repair, all the way down to how your breath smells. Drinking 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water daily for optimal hydration is super important.
Someone asked me the other day if I worry about other gyms being my competition, and I answered with an affirmative NO.
First and foremost, when you bring your A game daily and constantly strive to improve and grow, there will be little competition in your area of expertise.
Second, I look at other gyms as allies because we are all on the same mission. There are over 300 hundred million people in the US & we are creeping up on a 50% obesity rate; therefore, there aren't enough gyms to solve these issues. Plenty of people need our help, so there is no need to compete with getting clients.
Lastly, the competition is fast food, medication, and television. These are all things that I battle daily. These things are fighting my mission tooth and nail. We struggle to keep people away from these evil empires and struggle to help people understand and take the steps required to improve their health and fitness.
This is what we are up against as health professionals. Big Pharma & Insurance agencies will tell you they can help you dance around your horrible lifestyle by medicating and insuring yourself so that your family has coverage and will be taken care of when you die.
This is what we call reactive behavior. We keep doing the things that cause us harm, then we react when something unfavorable happens, and we get sick and look for the medication crutch.
I advise staying proactive, living a healthy lifestyle, and AVOID these issues and problems before they arise.
You have two choices, either listen to me, or you will get a visit from "Big Lou" cause he's on meds too!!
Committed to your health,
Coach Matt
