Fit for Life: No Exceptions to This Rule

I am at the tail end of a much-needed and well-deserved vacation.

I posted the aftermath of one of my workouts on social media, one where my face was red as a tomato, and a friend of mine private messaged me the following. Do you even work out on vacation? Don't you ever stop?

Well, here's my answer to them: Vacations, summertime, holidays, and even something as extreme as a death in the family are not excuses to fall back on your commitments, and I am committed to my health and fitness every day, all year long, even on vacations and holidays.

Your health and fitness aren't seasonal, and I want everyone reading this to know it is a commitment as important as brushing your teeth and is something you need to be consistent with to achieve and maintain results, or you will lose it a lot faster than it took you to gain it.

If I didn't work out and stick to my routine, I would get lazy, fall into a rut, and find it much more difficult to regain momentum when I get home. Yes, I am human and can fall off track like everyone else.

To top it off, I even work for a couple of hours a day before heading out to ensure I stay caught up and don't fall behind. I want to avoid coming home to a pile of tasks that will stress me out.

When I am away, do I drink more than usual? YES, I DO. I may have 2 - 3 drinks over the day, but never enough to make me hungover and feel like crap the next day. That's not my idea of fun.

Do I eat as disciplined as I do when I am home? NO, I DO NOT. I don't fly off the handle and eat like crap the whole time. However, I do indulge in things I don't eat much at home.

We hit the market and buy stuff like yogurt, bread for sandwiches, and chips, which I don't eat during the week at home, and I don't drink as many protein shakes as usual, but I don't let vacations give me the excuse to fall too far off.

Please don't misunderstand me, as I am a BIG advocate of rest and relaxation, and letting your mind and body rest; however, that needs to be kept in moderation too; otherwise, as I said earlier, you fall into a rut, and it's challenging to get back on track when you do these things in excess.

This is also the time of the year when our attendance dips a little due to the summer season. People justify missing workouts because they are biking, walking outside more, and spending more time with the family, and I always say that's a BIG MISTAKE.

Going for a swim, strolling the neighborhood, and riding your bike are no substitutions for a 30-minute, high-intensity workout that will help you build muscle, burn fat, and give you a sense of fulfillment that you have accomplished something great for yourself.

Unless you are geared up for an intense bike ride or swim for 30 minutes straight, you are just checking the box and are not taking the appropriate steps to improve your health and fitness.

You NEED to get in your structured workout first, then head outside for some leisurely summertime fun activities.

Change your mindset!!

It's not about you but who you show up for daily. Who in your life needs you to be fit and healthy? That's a question only you can answer. I can tell you how to get there, but YOU need to develop your why.

I show up for my team, my members, and people like you reading this email that will someday click the link and come to my gym, so we can help you achieve ultimate health and fitness and change your life for the better.

In return for showing up for my team, I can step away and know everything will be good when I return. I have tremendous trust and confidence in them to not only run the show but continue to grow the business while I am gone, and that's why I invest in training and developing them to be better every week.

In addition, I have been submitting an article every week since 2013. I do this for people like you that read my articles with the hope I can set a good example and, someday, help you improve your situation. Even when I travel and go on vacation.

It's easy to fall off. I get it. Humans are hardwired to take the path of least resistance and seek comfort. It's in our DNA. I would love to go away, sleep in all day, get bombed nightly, and eat everything in sight, but at what expense?

To avoid this, we need to set standards and be nonnegotiable with keeping them. I am not saying to stay 100% all the time, as that would be nearly impossible, but we need to list our priorities and what's important to us and stay committed to the outcome we envision for ourselves. Every day, all year long.

There are no exceptions to this rule!!

Committed to your success,

Matt
