1-on-1 With Mattiello on 2017: Car Tax, Marijuana, 38 Studios, and More

Speaker Mattiello takes a look ahead to 2017 with GoLocal.
Repealing the car tax, addressing marijuana legalization, and tackling UHIP and charter school funding are just some of the issues Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello talked with GoLocalProv.com about this week in a sit-down interview, as the start of the 2017 General Assembly session is less than a month away.

Mattiello, who in November won reelection in District 15 in western Cranston by just 65 votes, talked about his priorities -- and the fiscal realities facing Rhode Island in the coming year.

One thing thing Mattiello emphasized on Thursday is that he believes Rhode Islanders deserve answers from the now-closed 38 Studios investigation, and that means releasing the State Police interviews -- and possibly more.

"There’s no problem with the State Police releasing the non-grand jury documents, and they should, " said Mattiello, as Governor Gina Raimondo continues to refuse to release them. "I've called for them to. I think they should release every piece of paper and every piece of testimony that exists. I think grand jury materials should be released also —but not all grand jury proceedings should be released without qualification."

"Let me be clear — my policy regarding 38 Studios differs than what might be in a different situation. I don’t want to create any precedent relative to that," added Mattiello. "I believe that 38 Studios was such a debacle and such a public investment and loss attached to it, that the public has the absolute right and need to know exactly what happened more so than than any other case probably ever in the state."
