From the Circus to PawSox - Live Entertainment is Declining Industry: Guest MINDSETTER™ Rollins

Rollins argues baseball, like the circus, is losing its popular appeal as live entertainment.
I recently had the mixed experience of attending what I’m told may well be the final ever live circus show in the state of Rhode Island, at the venue which I prefer to call the Providence Civic Center.

While I enjoyed the show, I probably would not have been in attendance except for the historic nature of that evening.  If I ever am offered an opportunity to attend another live circus show, I honestly might not be very interested in doing so.

Prior to attending what may have been Rhode Island’s final ever live circus show, it had been at least several years - and I’ve forgotten exactly how many since I previously attended any show at the Civic Center.  It may well be at least as many years, if ever, before I attend another Civic Center show.  As far as I’m concerned, I have other, much better ways to be spending my time, and money.

The fact that I had to empty my pockets, and go through a police state security checkpoint in order to get into the Civic Center is a side issue.  Also relatively irrelevant is me spending a few dollars to buy a plain hot dog, as a quick snack, because I didn’t have time to eat dinner before the show.  Even the very embarrassed, and apologetic woman sitting next to me, who was too big for her assigned seat, and ended up encroaching into my seat was not a serious issue.

All of those inconveniences would have been irrelevant, minor irritations, if it were not for the fact that I have plenty of other entertainment possibilities available.

From Circus to Baseball

Unlike the Civic Center, I’ve never once been to McCoy Stadium.  I’m not a baseball fan, or a fan of any kind of professional sports.  It’s extremely unlikely that I personally will ever attend any games at any proposed new Pawtucket Red Sox (PawSox) stadium.  Such alleged entertainment has minimal interest for me.

While I don’t know exact attendance records at the Civic Center, I’m willing to bet they’re declining.  I do know that attendance at McCoy Stadium is declining, as is attendance at other ballparks.  My lasting personal reaction to my recent circus attendance is that improvements in home audio, and home video quality have made attending any kind of live entertainment far less necessary than it used to be.

Without government subsidies both the Civic Center, and the adjacent Convention Center would already be bankrupt, and closed.  If the proposed new PawSox stadium was really such a great business investment, then the team’s owners would have no problem finding plenty of private investors to fund their dreams.  All such live entertainment is a declining industry, which the state of Rhode Island has no legitimate reason to be spending any money to subsidize.
