VIDEO: 18-Year-Old Shot in Providence, Just Hours After Press Conference on City's Latest Homicides

An 18-year-old male was the victim of gun violence in Providence on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, he had been shot in the leg and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital. 

The incident reportedly took place in the city's West End, in the area of Union Avenue and Cranston Street.

It marks the latest in a series of violent incidents in Providence this summer. 

Just hours earlier, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley joined Providence Police Major Oscar Perez and Detectives Major David Lapatin to discuss what was the city’s 9th homicide of the year -- see Facebook video below. 

 

Latest in Providence

On Wednesday afternoon, a man in his 30s was fatally stabbed in Silver Lake; police announced Thursday they have a suspect in custody.

During the press conference, police announced that another victim of violence — who had been in intensive care since Friday night after being shot on Texas Avenue — succumbed to his injuries. 

The city now has ten homicides in the first seven months of the year, following 5 in the entirety of 2022.
