NEW: ProJo Union Calls Out GateHouse for Secret Healthcare Rollbacks

The Providence Newspaper Guild is calling out the new ownership group of the Providence Journal for secretly trying to rollback healthcare coverage for employees without bargaining.

In a letter sent on Monday to its members entitled "GateHouse backs off change in Health care cutoff policy (It Still Stinks)," the Guild explained how it discovered that new owners GateHouse would be cutting off its share of health insurance for employees out sick for more than 90 days.

"The Guild discovered last week that GateHouse/LMG instituted a policy six months ago where the company stops paying its share of an employer's health insurance premium if the employee is out sick 90 straight days, requiring the employee to pay the whole health insurance premium her or himself," wrote the Guild.

"However, after questioning by the Guild Thursday, company representatives acknowledged the 90 day limit had been imposed in error at the Journal.  The company agreed that for Journal employees, the GateHouse You're-On-Your-Own (YOYO) date for health coverage would be pushed back to 180 straight days out sick," the Guild continued.

When reached for comment on Thursday, Guild president John Hill said that the guild was questioning the YOYO policy, as it is not mentioned in the GateHouse policy manual.

"We're continuing to talk about it [with GateHouse]," said Hill on Thursday. " As long there are conversations, our view is our situation is this who we have to live with, so we'll keep the lines of communication open."

"One of our questions is how we found out about it," said Hill.  The Guild newsletter stated that Journal employees only found out when two members on extended sick leave were called and told there were nearing the 90 day limit and needed to arrange COBRA payments with GateHouse to continue coverage

"We're still in an info gathering state, we'd like to see some more information about how we got here," said Hill.

GateHouse did not respond to request for comment from GoLocal on Thursday.
