RI Breaks Record for Daily COVID Cases — 28 More Deaths Over Weekend

The Rhode Island Department of Health announced Tuesday that the state’s COVID numbers have increased dramatically.

The state’s transmission rate jumped from last week’s 769 per 100,000 residents over a 7 day period -- it has now exploded to 925, an indicator of just how contagious the Omicron variant is.

The agency had not reported data since before the holiday.

RIDOH also reported 28 new deaths. The state’s total is now 3,046.

And, the state announced that Monday was a record number of cases in a single day — 2,379.

In addition, the percent of those testing positive jumped to 12.7% — it had been 5.7%.

Hospitalizations also jumped from last week’s 273 to 295.

According to sources, Rhode Island Hospital has begun canceling non-emergency procedures.

Testing continues to be a significant issue for the state.
