RI Ranks Highest for Car Tax

Rhode Island has the highest vehicle property taxes in the country, paying an average of $1,133 according to a report from WalletHub

Virginia and Kansas are the two states just ahead of Rhode Island in the 49 and 50 spots, paying $962 and $905 respectively. 

RI also ranks 42nd in average real estate tax, paying an average of $2,779, according to the WalletHub report.

New York is just ahead of Rhode Island at the 41 spot, paying $2,734 while Vermont is behind RI at 43 and pays $2,934.  

According to WalletHub, the average American household spends $2,089 on property taxes for their homes each year while residents of the 27 states that have vehicle property taxes pay an additional $423 per year. 

The Study

To complete the study, WalletHub analyzed all 50 states and the District of Columbia in terms of real estate and vehicle property taxes based on census data and national car sales. They also consulted a panel of leading property tax experts for insight on both the practical and political side.
