Suspect Arrested in Newport Shooting That Sent Victim to Hospital

Newport Police announced that an arrest has been made in a shooting in the city over the weekend. 

The incident took place on Friday, when a victim was taken to the hospital.

Latest Information Released 

Newport police provided the following details Tuesday morning. 

On Friday, July 5, 2024, at about 12:53 AM, Newport Police officers responded to the area of Jade Way and Kennedy Road for a report of shots fired. 

Before officers arrived, a victim was transported to Newport Hospital by friends; the victim was subsequently transported to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to detectives, they believe that 24-year-old Johnny Escobar of Middletown was involved in this incident. 

Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Escobar for "Possession of Firearms by Certain Persons Prohibited, Assault with Intent to Commit Specified Felonies, License or Permit Required for Carrying Pistol and Firing in a Compact Area."

Escobar was taken into custody on July 8, 2024 and will be arraigned on July 9, 2024 in Newport District Court.
