UPDATED: Coronavirus in RI Spirals Over Weekend - 1,600+ New Cases and Hospitalizations Hit 212

The number of new coronavirus cases in Rhode Island jumped 1,629 over the three days reported from the weekend, according to the state's Department of Health (RIDOH) data.

And, hospitalizations jumped to 212 — a 100% increase over the past months.

The new numbers show a rampant growth in cases and raise more concerns about the lack of significant controls implemented by Governor Gina Raimondo’s administration.

Latest Developments

On Thursday, there had been 669 new cases (adjusted upwardly by RIDOH)

Friday, cases in the state jumped to 687 — another new record.

Saturday and Sunday combined for 834 new cases on limited testing.

Dr. Michael Fine appearing on GoLocal LIVE warned about the current set of conditions. 

Fine is the former state Director of Health, and has warned for the past two months that the lack of restrictions and mask wearing has been leading to an ongoing increase in the spread of the virus and thus, new cases and hospitalizations.
