RI State Police Arrest Cranston Police Officer for Assault

The Rhode Island State Police announced that members of the department’s Major Crimes Unit have arrested Andrew Leonard, age 45. He is a member of the Cranston Police Department. He was charged with one count of simple assault.              

On March 27, 2020, Colonel Michael J. Winquist of the Cranston Police Department  — a former member of the State Police leadership — requested the State Police investigate a use of force incident that occurred within the Cranston Police Department. 

The investigation resulted in the arrest of Leonard and the filing of the charge.

On May 18, 2020, Leonard was processed at State Police Headquarters, arraigned by a Justice of the Peace, and released on personal recognizance.

Leonard’s next court appearance is scheduled in the Kent County Third District Court on September 16, 2020.  

Under Rhode Island General Law 11-5-3, a person found guilty of Simple Assault may be imprisoned up to one (1) year and fined up to one thousand dollars ($1000), or both.
