New FBI Crime Data: RI’s Most Violent Cities and Towns

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released its 2018 crime statistics for the United States — and according to the FBI, violent crime and property crime fell in 2018 from the previous year.

Across the country, violent crime declined 3.3 percent between 2017 and 2018. Property crime decreased 6.3 percent during the same time period, according to Crime in the United States, 2018, the annual crime statistics report produced by the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program.

Every Category of Violent Crime Down — Except Rape

In 2018, there were about 1.2 million violent crimes, according to the report. Nearly every category of violent crime decreased between 2017 and 2018, with the exception of rape offenses, which increased 2.7 percent.

Providence had the most reported rapes in Rhode Island 2018 with 196 and aggravated assaults with 452 — but Providence did not have the most violent crimes — which includes murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assaults — per capita.

As GoLocalProv.com reported Monday, Providence Police have stopped Tweeting about crimes in the city and sharing critical information with residents. 

According to the FBI, the northeast had the fewest violent times per capita in 2018 — with the west having the most. 

* Exeter is not included in the FBI reporting list, as it does not have its own police department.
