There were three individuals on board at the time.
The man who died in the accident was Daniel P. Wilson, 77.
He died on the way to the hospital after a single-engine aircraft departing from Albany failed an attempt to land at Block Island State Airport.
Wilson was the District 5 legislator.
Emergency responders, including over 20 personnel from New Shoreham Fire and Police Departments, the Rescue Squad, and on-site Rhode Island Airport Corporation (RIAC) Operations staff, were immediately deployed to the scene.
The three occupants were transported to the Block Island Medical Center.
The airport is operated by the Rhode Island Airport Corporation.
It opened in 1950.
In an average year, about 8,000 to 10,000 fly in and out of the Island.
