About Incident

According to police, the victim responded to Central Station on Saturday night to report the assault.

The victim — a woman in her early 30s — told police that she and a friend had ordered an Uber to pick them up from Salon Nightclub in Providence shortly after 2 AM Saturday morning.

The woman told police they thought they were getting into the correct car but the driver “tricked” them.

The victim told police they had the driver pull over in front of the Providence Place mall, at which time the victim asked her friend to take a picture of the car's license plate.

At that time, the victim said the driver got out of the car, grabbed the phone, and threw it at the window of the Old Navy store — and then grabbed the victim and threw her to the ground.

Mall security and Providence rescue showed up at the scene where the victim refused treatment; she then filed the police report later in the day as noted above.

Detectives are currently investigating.

Uber on their website and app lists a number of safety tips for riders including confirming an ordered driver's identity.
