Loaded Gun Seized on Federal Hill by Providence Police

Providence police on patrol off of Atwells Avenue on Federal Hill overnight seized a loaded gun — and said the individual arrested is being charged with possession of a firearm without a license.

Shortly after 2 AM Sunday morning, police said they were patrolling Spruce Street — off of Atwells Avenue — after receiving reports of cars being broken into in the area. 

Police said they saw a car idling in the road and asked it to move, at which point police said people next to the vehicle shouted at the driver to leave the scene. 

At that time, police said the vehicle attempted to flee the area at a high rate of speed, at which point police activated the cruiser's overhead lights and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. 

Police said the driver was uncooperative and removed from the vehicle; police said a subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a loaded weapon. 

The driver of the vehicle — which had Massachusetts plates — was later identified as Kenneth Providence, age 24. 

He was charged with possession of a firearm without a license.
