Meet the Candidates: Rep. Anastasia Williams

Rep. Williams
Meet the candidates this election year. GoLocal is featuring all the candidates for General Assembly, those running for Mayor in cities across the state, and the Congressional candidates. This feature allows each candidate the opportunity to express their views on the issues. Meet Representative Anastasia Williams. She is running for re-election in House District 9.

1. What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

The biggest political issues are jobs, economic development and education – and all are related.  The job climate in Providence and our state has to improve because too many people are either unemployed or working at jobs that barely allow them to make ends meet.  I have supported efforts in the last few years that have lowered taxes to attract new companies.  The key to economic development is making sure our people have the skills they need to succeed in the job market.  I will always make certain our state budget includes sufficient funds to invest in jobs’ skills training and workforce development.  We have to continue to provide good and fair state funding for our public schools to get students ready for the job market.  Not everyone can attend college, but we have to make sure our students are getting the skills they need to get jobs when they graduate high school and hopefully encourage them to attend college.  I will always fight to make sure that CCRI, RIC and URI are affordable for everyone to have the chance to get ahead.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

We have to expand job opportunities to improve our economy.  I represent a district where many people are struggling, so I want to make certain that people of color have the same opportunities to get ahead in the job market. That can be accomplished by investing in public education at a very early age.  This year, I supported increased state funding for Pre-Kindergarten programs, and we also have made certain that every school district in Rhode Island has the funding for all-day kindergarten. We also added millions of dollars in the budget this year to help students who are still learning the English language. We also provided funding, for the first time, to make the SAT tests free for every student in Rhode Island.  Everyone should have the opportunity to attend college, and the cost of taking the SATs will no longer be an issue.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

Improving our self-image as a state is a big challenge.  I get tired of hearing all the negative comments from Rhode Islanders who don’t appreciate all the great things we have to offer here.  We have a beautiful state with many wonderful people, but you would never know it because we have so many people who want to tear us down.  Can we do better? Of course.  But we are trying to make the investments in education, improving economic development and increasing job opportunities to make us all proud to live and work here.

4.  Why are you running for office?

I want to continue to be a strong voice for people of color, the under-served and the under-represented. We get elected to represent the people of our districts, and I certainly know the challenges that our people are facing.  That’s why I have worked to raise the minimum wage by 30% over the last four years and successfully fought to increase the wages for restaurant workers who rely on tips. Some of the people who work the hardest, such as nursing home workers, those who take care of people with disabilities, and child care workers, have all received increased wages from the state.  Each of the last two years, I was proud to advocate for a major increase in the earned income tax credit that benefits working families.  I know that finding good, safe affordable housing is a major issue, so this year I worked hard to make certain that we passed a $50 million housing bond issue on the ballot this November. As long as I am in office, I wll work each day to improve the quality of life for the people of District 9.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

God, and the folks He sends to guide me though each day, are the inspiration in my life.  Having been born in Panama and spending my early years there, I have seen what it is like to struggle in other countries and I feel truly blessed to be living in the land of opportunity in the U.S.  God watches over me each day, empowers me and supports me.  The strength that I have to fight for the people of District 9 in Providence is all due to God.
