100 Hole Golf Marathon Raises Over $55K for The Burke Fund

Nearly 40 golfers to take part in Burke Fund Golf Marathon
The 5th annual Burke Fund 100 Hole Golf Marathon is underway at East Greenwich’s Potowomut Golf Club.

The Burke Fund provides financial aid to students involved in the game of golf to help them get a college education. It is one of the oldest golf scholarship programs in the country.

This year’s marathon features 39 golfers from Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts, who have already raised more than $55,000 for the Fund.

“I’m playing in my 5th Burke Fund Marathon this year and it has certainly been rewarding. The reason I got involved with the Burke Fund is because I was fortunate to be awarded a Burke Scholarship while attending Bryant University,” said Marathon Chairman Nicholas Maresca.

Last year, the marathon raised $93,018 for the Burke Fund.

In order to get 100 holes in, each player will have their own cart and will be able to hit multiple balls on Par 3's and short par 4's.

Hitting and completing a hole with multiple balls counts as multiple holes played.

“It is a long day, but to make the day fun participants have various contests such as Longest Drive, Closest to the Pin, most money raised, as well as, most holes played,” said Maresca.

Maresca added, “I truly appreciate everyone who’s playing and raised funds, purchased a tee sign, or donated to the raffle."

About The Burke Fund

The Burke Fund was named for John P. Burke, of Newport, who was a golfer not only in Rhode Island, but nationally as well.  Burke’s college career was interrupted during World War II when he entered the U.S. Army and tragically lost his life following the Allied invasion of North Africa. The Burke Fund was established in 1946 as a tribute to Rhode Islanders who served in World War II.

The Burke Fund provides financial aid to qualified students to assist them in obtaining a college education and it is one of the oldest golf scholarship programs in the country.

Since its inception, the Burke Fund has awarded over $3 million in college financial aid.
