Five Takeaways From The Rams 64-63 Win Over Fordham
Hassan Martin
Hassan Martin has been great for the Rams over the last couple of weeks but tonight was not one of those nights.
Martin only netted six points on 2-of-4 shooting from the field and knocked down only two of his six free throws and grabbed four rebounds in 19 minutes of play.
The six points ends a streak of five straight games in double-figures for Martin.
The fact he was in foul trouble certainly did not help.
E.C. Matthews
E.C. Matthews returned to action after missing the last game with a foot injury and was a bit rusty.
Matthews only put up eight points on 2-of-9 shooting from the field, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.
The eight points is the lowest point total that Matthews has posted in the last ten games, dating back to December 6 against Southern Miss where he also had eight points. He reached double-figures in every game in between.
Matthews also led the team in turnovers against Fordham with four.
Jared Terrell
Jared Terrell led the Rams in scoring for the second straight game, netting 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point land.
Terrell's performance in this game follows up a 19 point performance in Rhody's last game against St. Bonaventure. The 19 points is a career high.
Terrell's freshman season has gone through the typical ebbs and flows. He got off to a great start, struggled a bit in the middle and now in the last two games has really turned it on, and the Rams have needed him.
40.7 %
If URI had lost this game, there really would have been only one stat you could point too and say "that's why they lost" and that stat is free throw shooting.
URI shot 11-of-27 from the free throw line for a shooting percentage of 40.7. Hassan Martin was 2-of-6 and T.J. Buchanan was 1-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Free throw shooting has not necessarily cost the Rams yet this season but the games are getting bigger and URI can't afford to throw points away at the line like they have been doing.
Fordham shot 73% from the charity stripe and lost.
Biruta for the Win
Trailing 63-62 with nine seconds left, E.C. Matthews drove to the basket but missed the layup, luckily Gilvydas Biruta was right there. Biruta tapped the ball back into the basket with 0.2 seconds left on the clock giving the Rams a big road win.
Biruta also had one of the best games of his career, netting 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. Biruta also grabbed nine rebounds, seven of which were on the offensive side and of course one of those seven was the biggest rebound of the game.
Has to be a confidence boosting night for Biruta.
