NEW: Brown Football Announces Assistant Coaches for Upcoming Season

New Brown University head football coach James Perry has named his coaching staff for the upcoming season.

The staff consists of offensive coordinator Vinny Marino, defensive coordinator Tim Weaver, offensive line coach Michael McCarthy, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Ryan Mattison, defensive line coach Michael Donovan, defensive backs coach & special teams coordinator Darryl Jackson, running backs coach Eric Bunker, outside linebackers coach Willie Edwards, quarterbacks coach Seitu Smith, and coordinator of football operations & player personnel Paul Frisone.

Marino takes over as Brown's new offensive coordinator after two seasons calling the plays and working with the wide receivers at Bryant. A 1992 graduate of UConn with a bachelor's degree in Economics, Marino earned a master's degree in Physical Education from Western Carolina in 1996. 

Marino has also made coaching stops at Davidson, Boston College, Georgetown, Columbia, UConn, Rhode Island, Richmond, Holy Cross, Western Carolina, and Bowdoin.

Weaver comes to Brown from the University of Delaware, where he was the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach since February of 2013. A 29-year college coaching veteran, Weaver had previously served for seven years as the head coach at Bethany (WV) College.  He added director of athletics duties in August of 2008.

His coaching career in football also includes serving as an assistant coach at Columbia, Harvard, West Virginia Wesleyan, Hofstra, and Western Connecticut State.

McCarthy joins the Brown football staff after recent positions with Rutgers University, the Detroit Lions and the Cleveland Browns. A 2007 graduate of Widener University where he was an outside linebacker and long snapper, McCarthy was the offensive quality control coach at Rutgers for the 2018 season. He also has a slew of collegiate coaching experience, having coached tight ends at North Carolina Central in 2014.

He was an offensive graduate assistant offensive line coach at Tulane, the video director at Western Michigan, the offensive line coach at the College of New Jersey, and a video assistant at Rutgers. 

Mattison comes to Brown after two seasons with Perry as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Bryant. A 2003 graduate of Boston College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing, he spent four years at his alma mater as an offensive assistant.

He also made coaching stops at Holy Cross, Assumption, Bowdoin, Rhode Island and Anna Maria.

Donovan was a member of the Bryant staff for the last two years with Perry and is a 2011 graduate of Bentley University with a degree in Corporate Finance and Accounting and earned his master's degree in taxation from Bentley later that year.

Donovan was the defensive backs coach at Harvard from 2014 to 2016, and an offensive coaching assistant and football operations assistant for the Crimson in 2011 and 2012. He was a student coach at Bentley in 2010 and a defensive quality control coach at Delaware in 2013.

Jackson comes to Brown after seven seasons on the Bryant staff as secondary coach and special teams coordinator. A native of Los Angeles, CA, the veteran coach has had successful coaching stints at Florida Atlantic (2007-2009), where he was the offensive coordinator in 2009, Arizona State (2001-2006), Boise State (1998-2000), Indiana State, Redlands and the University of San Diego. 

A four-year starter in the defensive backfield at the University of San Diego, Jackson was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

Bunker launches his first season on the Brown staff, coming to College Hill from Bryant after two seasons as the running backs coach for the Bulldogs. He spent the 2016 season as the offensive quality control coach at Princeton, helping the Tigers win their second Ivy League Championship in four years. Prior to his stint at Princeton, Bunker also worked directly under the Director of Football Operations as an intern with the New England Patriots.

A 2012 graduate of Amherst College, Bunker earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in American Studies and graduated cum laude.  He was a four-year member of the football team and captained the 2011 team to an undefeated season and a NESCAC Championship.

Edwards comes to Brown from the Moses Brown School, where he was the head coach since 2011, posting a 52-16 record. After a 4-4 season his first year, the Quakers went 6-2 in his second before going 8-1 in 2013 and reaching the Division III Super Bowl.

Moses Brown moved up to Division II the following season and won back to back D-II titles (in 2014 and '15) and also reached the Super Bowl in 2016 and 2017 before their move to D-I this fall. Edwards, who started at Moses Brown as an assistant football coach in 2005, is a 2003 graduate of Johnson & Wales with a Bachelor's degree in Sports Management.

Smith was the director of player personnel at Dartmouth in 2018. An all-purpose receiver and gifted return specialist at Harvard, Smith finished fourth in school history with a 9.6 career yards per punt return average and fifth with a 19.9 career yards per kick return average.

He earned a degree in Sociology from Harvard in 2015 and a Master's of Education at Dunham University in England. He served as an assistant football coach at Florida's J.P. Taravella High School where he coached running backs and linebackers and taught math.

A 20-year veteran of the Brown football staff, Frisone continues his role as the director of player personnel. A 1993 graduate of Western New England College where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Government, Frisone has two Ivy championships under his belt as a defensive coach at Brown. He also has experience at Union College as a three-year defensive line coach.
