Brown Football Falls to Cal Poly 44-15 in Season Opener

The Brown Bears fell to Cal Poly 44-15 in their season opener on Friday night in California.

The game marked Brown’s first contest on the west coast in over 100 years, the previous one coming at the 1916 Rose Bowl Game.

Brown’s Rally Falls Short

After trailing 17-6 in the second quarter, the Bears got a 26-yard touchdown run from Scott Boylan to cut their deficit to 17-12.

The Bears would pull within two, 17-15 when freshman kicker Dylan Brady nailed a 30-yard field goal with 3:06 left in the half.

However, that would be Brown’s final points of the game.

Cal Poly got a five-yard touchdown run by Joe Protheroe to take a 24-15 lead at the break.

The Mustangs would then get back-to-back touchdowns by Protheroe in their first two possessions of the second half to take a 37-15 lead.

Cal Poly would add one more touchdown and cruise to the win 44-15.

In the game, Brown sophomore quarterback Michael McGovern threw for 312 yards in his collegiate debut.

Next Up

The Bears return to action on Friday, September 21 when they host the Harvard Crimson under the lights.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. It will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
