Former PC Basketball Star Garces Named Head Coach of St. Rays

Former Providence College basketball star Ruben Garces has been named the head coach of the St. Raphael Academy boys basketball team.

Garces replaces Tom “Saar” Sorrentine, who announced his retirement earlier this month, as GoLocalProv reported. 

Garces served as an assistant coach to Sorrentine this past season.

Garces in Basketball

After playing at Navarro Junior College in Texas, Garces came to Providence where he played for the Friars from 1995 to 1997.

During his senior season, Garces led the Friars to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, where they lost to Arizona.

Following his time at Providence, Garces played professional basketball for 18 seasons, including 13 games with the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors in 2001.

He finished his playing career overseas, where he played in Spain, Argentina, Venezuela, and France.
