GAME ON: The Player - Jake Mortude

What are you looking forward to this season?
Since dropping to Division II, I feel our ability to play with the best has certainly increased. Also I look forward to playing with some of the best baseball players around from Westerly High School.

One of the biggest challenges is balancing schoolwork and sports. School comes first, so in order for me to play baseball I need to focus on academics. Although it is difficult, I manage to play the sport I love while keeping up with my grades.
Who is your biggest motivator?
I have many motivator's, however if I had to choose just one, it would most likely be my Dad. He does not push baseball on me, which I love, but he leads by example with his work ethic. His mind set is "all business" which is also mine when I step onto the field.
Who is your biggest rival?
I would have to say either Stonington or Chariho. Whenever the bulldog’s clash with either of these teams, things heat up pretty quick...I love it. It truly makes the game interesting.
What are you working to improve your game?
One aspect of my game that I have been attempting to improve on for some time is my ability to hit opposite field. Going with the pitch is one of the hardest tasks in baseball, and I feel my game can improve immensely if I work towards this.
What is your greatest memory on the field?
My favorite memory on the diamond is easy. My sophomore year we played North Kingstown, who is known for their success, in a semi final, Division 1 playoff game. On a relay from right field, we turned two on a player tagging up, and won the game. It was the best feeling to make the final out.
How are you able to balance your schoolwork with practices, games, and training?
By doing what is asked of me in school, and completing projects and schoolwork ahead of time, I can create time for baseball. I love it and couldn't imagine my life without the sport.
Where do you see yourself going from here, do you plan to pursue this sport in college?
From High School, I see myself attending college. I'm not sure if I shall continue this sport in college, however it would be very nice to. If I received the opportunity to, I would definitely take it.
