The University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team shot just 52% from the free throw line and fell 84-82 to the Bucknell Bison on Saturday night in game one of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii.

Rhode Island shot 23 free throws and made just 12 of them.

The loss drops URI to 5-4 on the season, while Bucknell improves to 5-5 overall.

Missed Free Throws Cost Rams

With the game tied at 80 following a Cyril Langeivine three-point play, Bucknell took the lead back 82-80 on a layup by Bruce Moore.

Rhode Island had a chance to tie the game, but Fatts Russell made one of two free throws, making the score 82-81 with 50 seconds left in the game.

The Bison then pulled ahead 83-81 and this time it was Langevine at the free throw line with a chance to tie it, but he made just one of two free throws, leaving Bucknell in the lead 83-82.

The Bison would get one of two free throws from Jimmy Soto to give them an 84-82 lead with eight seconds left.

The Rams had one more chance to win the game but a three by Jeff Dowtin would not fall, giving Bucknell the win.

The Rams were led by Russell, who poured in 26 points on 10 of 20 shooting from the field.

Langevine also added 20 points and grabbed six rebounds.

URI returns to action on Sunday, December 23 when they take on TCU or Charlotte.
