E.C. Matthews to play professionally in Finland
Former URI basketball star E.C. Matthews has signed a one year deal with Finland’s Kouvot Kouvola of Korisliiga, according to Keucheyan Sports Management.

This comes after Matthews played for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA’s Summer League, where he averaged just five minutes per game and did not score a point.

Matthews graduated URI as the third leading scorer in program history with 1,899 career points.

He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2017 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship, helping to lead the Rams to their second tournament title in program history.

Throughout his career, Matthews was named to the A-10 all-conference team four times, and earned third-team honors in 2017-18.

He finished his career as the only player in program history to score 1,800 points, grab 500 rebounds and dish out 200 assists.

Matthews Injury History

Throughout his college career, Matthews was plagued with injuries.

This past season, he missed multiple weeks with a fractured left wrist after a fall in the final minutes of URI’s game against Nevada.

Prior to last season starting, he missed time in the preseason due to knee tendinitis.

In 2015-16, he suffered a season-ending knee injury in the first half of the first game of the year, forcing him to take a medical redshirt and allowing him to play this season.
