Rhode Island men’s basketball head coach David Cox announced the promotions of T.J. Buchanan and Jerrell Coleman, as well as the retention of assistant coach Tyron Boswell.

He will oversee the day-to-day operations for the team, including all travel arrangements and daily schedules for the team.

He serves as the staff liaison between the basketball team and both the facilities staff and compliance office.

"T.J. brings a maturity and wealth of knowledge to Rhode Island basketball. He is a product of this program, having played here. He understands what it takes for players to succeed on and off the court,” said Cox.

Buchanan played for URI from 2011 through 2015.

About Coleman

Coleman will enter his sixth season as part of the staff in 2018-19 following his promotion to the role of Director of Player Development.

After four seasons as a team manager – including two years as Head Manager/Special Assistant of Basketball Operations – Coleman was the Assistant Director of Basketball Operations last season.

"Through the years, Jerrell has steadily increased his responsibilities. The support he provides for our student-athletes, coaches and fellow staff members is invaluable. He understands the game of basketball, and more importantly, he understands the culture we have established at Rhode Island,” said Cox.

About Boswell

Boswell will enter his second season as an assistant coach for the Rams. He was part of the staff that won the first regular-season title in 2017-18.

Boswell has played an important role in recruiting Jared Terrell (now with the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves) as well as incoming freshman Dana Tate.

"Ty has been around the game of basketball a long time and has a strong network of connections. He continues to grow as an assistant coach, and with him, Kevin Sutton and John Carroll, I am confident we have a coaching staff with a strong mix of experience, basketball IQ and leadership for the young men in the program to follow,” said Cox.

Boswell also has taken on a major role in assembling the team's schedule for the 2018-19 season.

Season Opener

URI has made two straight NCAA Tournament appearances, but will enter their first season under Cox.

The Rams open the 2018-19 season on Tuesday, November 6 when they host Bryant University.
