The New England Patriots have released veteran backup quarterback Brian Hoyer making rookie Jarrett Stidham the primary backup to Tom Brady.

Hoyer has been Brady’s primary backup since his return to the team midway through the 2017 season.

“Brian has been great for us. He’s great for Tom. He’s done a nice job in the preseason, obviously. Brian knows our system, knows how to operate and function within the things we do, throws the ball well and is an extremely hard worker. Really smart, great teammate and as good a leader as any backup quarterback that I’ve been around," said offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels earlier this week.

During this preseason, Hoyer went 18 of 22 for 202 yards and two touchdowns and one interception in wins over the Detroit Lions and the Tennessee Titans.

However, he did not see any action in either of the final two preseason games.

New England has not started a season with three quarterbacks on their 53 man roster since 2011, when they had Brady, Hoyer and Ryan Mallett.

Stidham in the Preseason

New England drafted Stidham in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of Auburn.

In four preseason games, Stidham completed 61 of 90 passes for 731 yards and four touchdowns with one interception.

He also rushed for 88 yards on 19 attempts.

Stidham played the entire fourth preseason game and went 18 of 28 for 225 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

“Whatever my role is on this team that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to continue to work as hard as I possibly can to help the team any way I can so that’s the way I’m looking at it,” said Stidham following the Patriots fourth preseason game.
