Patriots Set for Joint Practice with Saints in West Virginia

Patriots safety Devin McCourty
The New England Patriots will wrap up practice at Gillette Stadium on Tuesday and head down to West Virginia for a joint practice with the New Orleans Saints, ahead of their second preseason game on Saturday night in New Orleans.

"It's always fun, I think it helps training camp a little bit when you get to go out there and practice against a different team, see different looks, different guys, not hitting on the same guys every day," said Patriots safety Devin McCourty.

Joint practices have become more and more popular in the NFL since 2011, when a new collective bargaining agreement did away with two a days and limited padded practices. In 2014, the NFL saw almost half of the teams in the league practice against another team. Numbers are expected to be similar this year.

Practicing Against The Saints

The Saints come into this season looking to have a bounce back year after missing the playoffs last season and then losing tight end Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks in the off season. However, New Orleans still possess a high powered offense that will challenge a young Patriots secondary.

"I always think it's good for the young guys,  cause you get to see a different look. You know you come in the NFL and its just your team you start to think that's all your going to see, obviously our offense gives us a lot but it's always good to see other good players. Especially for defense, we will see a guy like Drew Brees in practice, that will definitely help," said McCourty.

The Saints finished the year with a 7-9 record, but had the ninth best offense in the league, scoring 401 points.

"They have a great offense with Drew Brees, Colston, Mark Ingram, a lot of guys out there who are gonna put up a lot of points on offense so it's a good test for us," said third year free safety Duran Harmon.

Change of Pace

The two practices leading up to Saturday nights preseason game will present a change of pace for both teams.

"It will be a lot more intense, just going against another team, it's like a game feel so I’m excited to get out there next week and practice against the Saints," said Harmon.

Although it is a practice, the Patriots will not be going down there just to go through the motions. As LaGarrette Blount  said  "You know, we aren't gonna go out there and just go through the motions. We are going to go out there and compete, and that's a big part of why we go do this."

The Patriots and Saints will kick off preseason game number two on Saturday night in New Orleans at 7:30 p.m.
