Patriots Develin 1 of 4 Brown Alums in NFL

James Develin
Brown football alum and New England Patriots fullback, James Develin, is getting set for his fifth NFL season and his fourth with the Patriots.

Develin is now one of four Brown alums' in the NFL along with Zak Deossie (Giants), A.J. Cruz (Bears) and Courtland Clavette, who signed with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent  back in May.

"It's great, you got those two (Cruz and Clavette) and then obviously Zak Deossie is a long time vet in the league. So it's awesome to see my teammates and my friends getting out there and getting shots," Develin said after the completion of a training camp session at Gillette Stadium.

A.J. Cruz is the most recent Brown football player to sign on with an NFL team, signing a three year deal with the Chicago Bears in early August.

"I played with A.J. for two years, he's a great player, and I'm really proud of him, it's great to see all those guys get some exposure," Develin added.

A Proud Brown Alum

James Develin played four seasons at Brown University from 2006-2009, but not on the offensive end of the ball. Develin was a defensive end and made the All-Ivy League defensive team.

"I had a great time in my four years at Brown, I'm a proud alumni and, I try to stop down there and see, you know, my coaching staff is still down there, see Coach Estes, Coach McGrath, Coach  Sheehan and Coach Kelleher, all those guys down there. It's a great group of guys, and we are all like a big family there so it's great," Develin said

Develin went undrafted in 2010, playing one season in the Arena Football League and one season in the United Football League before joining the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad where he stayed until 2012 when he was signed by the Patriots.

Develin as a Patriot

Since coming to the Patriots, Develin has been mostly used for blocking purposes but does have ten receptions for 105 yards and one rushing touchdown.

"I love James and I think he's the best fullback in the league. He doesn't get as much credit for it because he doesn't get as many opportunities, but any time we call on him he delivers," said quarterback Tom Brady in a press conference prior to the Super Bowl.

Develin helped the Patriots get to the Super Bowl in 2014 by catching a touchdown pass in the AFC Championship game and then had one reception for six yards in the Super Bowl that saw the Patriots beat Seattle 28-24.

2015 Training Camp

Though New England comes into this training camp off of a Super Bowl title, James Develin is already looking ahead to this season, much like the rest of this team.

"The past is the past and we are  are just focused on the present and the future season. We are looking toward that, we're here preparing for this season and that's all we are focused on right now," Develin said.

Even though Develin now has a Super Bowl ring, like another Brown Alum, Zak Deossie, and has four NFL season's under his belt, he knows there is still room improve.

Develin said "I gotta improve across the board, that's what training camp is all about, coming out here with your team, improving as a team, trying  to put the best product out on the field. It doesn't really matter what year you are in, your always out here fighting and just trying to get better."

James Develin and the New England Patriots kick off their title defense on Thursday, September 10 when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers at Gillette Stadium.
